Musicians spend most of their time writing, which explains why a writer's block is especially
troubling. Here, Tao Asher shares five ways to overcome writer's block as a musician.
The first strategy is listening to music that inspires you. Every musician has some tracks which
inspired them to start making music. For Tao, these were Eminem, Kanye West, and Jay Z, to
name a few. Listening to music by artists you look up to will get you back into the right creative
space. Secondly, one should also look for inspiration outside music. This could be through
reading books, watching movies, traveling, or even admiring art in a gallery. Third, sometimes it
is challenging to begin writing from the first verse, so start anywhere - with the chorus, with the
end, or from the middle. Sometimes all you need to do is start, and everything else flows in to
create the structure you were looking for.
Fourth, tap into your own experiences in the songwriting process. If you do not have a specific
feeling that can be specifically tapped to create lyrics, remember past experiences that
provoked an intense emotional phase. Holding on to such emotions can help you dive into
creating a story for a song. Lastly, clean, reorganize, or change the space you work on. The
environment one is working within has a significant impact on the state of mind. In some
instances, the creative space stops working, and being in a cluttered space restricts creativity.
Tao Asher grew up in Miami Beach, Florida, where music was popular. Asher always enjoyed
listening to music and hanging out with artists such as Trippie Redd, Lil Pump, Ian Dior, Polo G.
He grew up listening to various artists who inspired him, which made him understand that he
wanted to venture into music.
Being a musician/producer, Asher's insights come from effective action, something he wants all
musicians to understand. However complex the writer's block is on you, do not give up writing
music.
