The cover of hip-hop artist Emil Aghayev’s debut, The Jump, features a mystical three-dimensional image of a rustic locale with a well in the center. The opening of the well draws your attention; it’s black, mysterious, and has depth that seems infinite but alluring, as if it’s a portal to a dream-oriented realm.
For Emil, this image represents a life in music. With a fierce flow and steely determination, Emil is setting off into the unknown via his debut tape, the exuberant and explorative, The Jump.
“There has always been this strange synchronicity in my life. I didn’t choose now to release this album. Life events put everything together, and it felt right,” says the Ontario, Canada-based MC.
You could say Emil was predestined to be onstage. While he was a budding rapper in high school messing with rhyming in his buddy’s basement, he attended a concert where he severally injured his thumb after an ambitious crowd-surfing antic where he attempted to mount the stage. Post high school, the pain from the injury truncated his desire to pursue a future in massage therapy, leaving him aimless and career less. With nothing to lose, he turned to thing that gave him the most pleasure: rapping.
Emil’s debut tape, The Jump, opens with the title track which rises forth with otherworldly ambience and a greeting treated with echo. With a little imagination, you can interpret the gesture as if Emil was introducing himself from a cavernous space deep in the well of the tape’s cover pic. Next, various voices form a sonic mosaic announcing The Jump. These are Emil’s friends, and, with their blessings, he begins his journey. Over a chill groove and three eclectic verses, showcasing his subject range and MC prowess and dynamics, Emil officially enters the hip-hop game.
