Continuation from part 2
Now no one works for free, and people offer services or products for a fee so a profit can be made. Now get your pencils and pads ready, shipping cost, tariffs, insurance, plus deadlines must be met, so what would you charge per item? Did you have the clientele that would support your movement?, Were you local? Did only your friends and family know about you? How are you going to get your product off? Did you hire a representative to showcase your line at trade shows? Come on now people work with me people, what did you do?
Now that's the industry version, what about someone who is in the process of finding there target market, sourcing there own material, basicly doing everything from a to z from there own house, It's a whole set of rules that apply now, for example you approach me to make you a jacket and some jeenz to match, right away you want to know how much? and how long will it take right? So i tell you to sit down with me as i create a spec sheet, which covers all of the information about the garment and it's cost, but the labor question is still unanswered, so i tell you a few days. What do you think the price would be or should be?
$60.00
$75.00
$110.00
$200.00
And what if i said $400.00 would you pay or would you walk away? Those that walk away was never my target market to begin with, they just wanted something different for cheap, and the person who that paid understood fully what my time was worth, now here's the math, a jacket and some jeenz that's heavily detailed, the fabric itself may run you anywhere from 5.99 to 20.00 per yard and you need 4 yards for the jacket and jeenz, that's 60.00, now we need zippers, buttons matching thread( not just any thread but top stitch thread and you may have one or more colors) wells that about 20.00, now i begin production o your garment, it takes me 6hrs each day for 4 days to complete your fit, due to school, my job, schoolwork, and so on. i paid my self minimum wage per hr $5.50 times it by 24( which i will not put in that much work just to make someone else something and it's not fully benefiting me) now just paying myself the minimum wage per hr is $132.00, the materials were $80.00, that's a total of $212.00 - 80.00 that cam,e out of my pocket
should i be paid more or less, How much more? How much less?
I'll leave that question open for discussion!
