King Wizard is a remarkable figure in the trap landscape. Often referred to as a genius, his influence on the genre has already been significant as the co-founder of Underdog Music alongside Big Papa and Alderman. Underdog’s reach within the music industry is vast, with their roster of successful producers having racked up a succession of gold and platinum records and billions of streams with some of hip-hop’s most successful artists. We caught up with King Wizard via Skype to discuss his latest venture, a brand new beat tape ‘The Underdogs’, produced alongside Alderman and Big Papa and scheduled for release next week. (We were blessed to receive a pre-release preview of the tape – and it’s certainly a record worth waiting for.)
‘This tape came about because we really wanted these beats to shine. My passion is working with other artists and ensuring that the beat and vocal marry perfectly to create one vibe and one great record, but with these beats, they just seemed to stand on their own. We wanted people to hear the pure vibe of the instruments and the drums and the passion that had gone into the creation without the distraction of any narrative or lyrical content. Clearly, trap and hip-hop is a very lyrically based genre, with the rapper or vocalist usually standing front and centre. We wanted this release to allow the music to take the stage and be heard without out any vocals to adorn it.’
We asked Wizard about his creative process. Where did the inspiration for this tape come from?
‘Inspiration has no source. It has no beginning and no end. It has no start and no finish, no purpose and no limit. Inspiration is not a resource to be used, but a state to be summoned, a wave to be ridden, a zone that cannot be entered but can only be realised. Inspiration is in every breath, in every taste, in every sight, in every smell, in every sound. Inspiration cannot be sought or found, but can only be realised. Before all of the distraction, we are all permanently and automatically inspired from our first to our last breath.’
We’ll have to take King Wizards word for it! ‘The Underdogs’ is out next week on all platforms, and is as powerful as it is understated. This is a must-listen for all fans of trap with live instruments, a great beat tape to end a great year for King Wizard, Big Papa, Alderman and Underdog Music.
