Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana’s notorious Ninth Ward, Justin “1st Degree” James is one of those artists who make you take a second look. His raspy voice, rugged good looks, intelligence, and solid work ethic put him a cut above many of his counterparts.
One-half of the group Division 1, 1st Degree has been putting in work for years, as evident by his strong media following. He has performed in venues all over the Southeast Region of the United States, with plans to venture out to more locations later this year. In addition, he has opened for several major acts, including 3-6 Mafia 1st Degree has dropped several mixtapes, with the latest being “C.O.C.A.N.E. Ambition”, a solo joint touting 13 tracks. His past work has served to gain much attention for this up and coming rapper, as he makes plans to branch out into other areas of business and entertainment.
Being raised in New Orleans’ Downtown area can help to shape an artist’s craft and grind. And so it was with 1st Degree, who credits his neighborhood and upbringing for providing him with the stamina needed to make his way through the entertainment world. He knows it can be a difficult path, but one he meets with open arms. 1st Degree is always open to a challenge and he is never one to back down from one. His lyrics deal with anything from the ladies to political rhetoric to life experiences that may seem harrowing to the casual listener, but all in a day in the life of 1st Degree.
New Orleans culture has been a colossal influence on Division 1. As 1st Degree puts it, “New Orleans is a big influence in my music – from the way I talk, dress ... My music is a reflection of me and I’m a reflection of New Orleans.” 1st Degree immersed himself in music when he was younger, as a way to occupy his time following the passing of his father. His vision for his future includes continuing to produce quality music, while working toward developing his own entertainment company. Having been influenced by legends such as Jay-Z, Nas & Tupac Shakur, 1st Degree is certain to take his place among the stars one day very soon.
