Transport yourself back to 90s hip-hop and R&B with Hookdiggy’s single “School Crush”. Hookdiggy brings us back to grade school when we would crush on people and ask them out through a note that requires them to check the yes or no box. From instrumentation to vocal production, this song fits perfectly with trending music in the 90s hip-hop and R&B world. This song immediately brings a sense of nostalgia for listeners who were big fans of old-school hip-hop music. Hookdiggy created a very upbeat and easy flowing single.
Hookdiggy releases “School Crush” in anticipation of his EP and as a part of his This Is Hip Hop Thursdays platform. This platform was created to help drive Hookdiggy to releasing new singles every week. His love for hip-hop has been a long time coming. After being introduced to The Dayton Family at a young age, Hookdiggy was exposed to the hip-hop world and fell in love with it. He began honing his skills and training in songwriting because he wanted to make a difference within his community and share lyrics that would touch the hearts of all people. His conscious lyrics are brought as an attempt to draw the attention of other creatives and listeners who may not be hip-hop fans but appreciate conscious rap. Hookdiggy wants to create an atmosphere where anyone listening to his music can relate to the lyrics, which he succeeded beautifully in “School Crush”.
Hookdiggy created a song that is so very much like the 90s music we can’t help but listen to it over and over again. His voice is reminiscent of Rick Ross and Lupe Fiasco. His chorus sounds a lot like Rick Ross while when he raps his verses, he has a similar flow to that of Lupe Fiasco. What also stands out is his production value. The flow of the song and the instrumentation built together is similar to that of Kanye West back in the day. When Kanye came out with albums like Graduation and Late Registration, his raps were very catchy and relatable and his production was off the charts. When listening to “School Crush”, there is a strong comparison that can be made between the production value of Hookdiggy and Kanye West.
“School Crush” is an absolutely unforgettable and captivating single. After listening to so much new hip-hop, it’s nice to listen to something that brings us back. This was a time when hip-hop music was really booming and getting top charts frequently. Hookdiggy just brought it all back. His song makes us feel happy and sentimental not only because of the musicality relating to that of 90s hip-hop, but also through the context of his lyrics. We all had a crush that we felt shy around and we all either sent or received those notes with the checkboxes. Hookdiggy brings it all back in the smoothest most melodic way.
