The controversy and allegations surrounding movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, has brought the corruption of Hollywood into the headlines yet again...and with it, has resurfaced Corey Feldman’s infamous interviews with ABC’s 20/20 and The View.
While many actors and musicians have murmured about these issues in the past, no one blew the whistle quite the way Feldman had years ago. The now 46-year-old American actor and singer fearlessly spoke out against the sex abuse in Hollywood during an interview with 20/20 in 2012.
As Feldman’s words returned to the spotlight following a flood of allegations against Weinstein from many prominent names in Hollywood, news spread last night alleging that Feldman was arrested on drug charges. The story alleged that the charge was for marijuana possession, a mere two days after news leaked that Feldman and other Hollywood elite were allegedly planning to name names in the press.
Feldman quickly took to Twitter to counter the accusation, as the arrest was later proven to be inaccurate. As he was speaking truth to power, these trumped-up charges were too much to be a simple coincidence.
Is this the dark side of Hollywood trying to discredit Feldman in retaliation for speaking out the truth?
The charges were in Louisiana, though the staff member who was in possession of medical marijuana, had a California license for it. While details have yet to emerge from the charges filed, here are the facts from what we know as of Sunday.
Feldman was in route to perform a concert with The Angels (his band) when their bus was pulled over for speeding. According to The News Star in Louisiana, the officer searched the vehicle after allegedly detecting the smell of marijuana. The former child actor and his staff were reportedly arrested and charged with a misdemeanor for possession of the drug, and driving under a suspended license while speeding. Since the charges were not felonies, Feldman was able to pay the $640.00 fine, rather than posting bond.
The reports that Feldman had been arrested, is a gross overstatement! Feldman was simply pulled over and given a citation, paid it and was on his way. Contact with Feldman’s staff and management for further confirmation of the incident proved unsuccessful prior to publication.
The publishing administrator for Feldman’s record label, CiFi Records, and Founder of Midtown Radio Inc, Michael DeBarge, the promotion company behind Feldman’s last three Top 40 charting singles, stated the following:
“The only Corey Feldman I know is sober and laser-focused. The guy is a health conscious vegetarian, who has to keep himself in top physical shape to get through all the concerts he’s doing. He is focused on his business, his family and nothing else. This guy [Feldman] just put out his best album to date. He had three nationally charting songs on the Cashbox charts. “Go 4 It” was his first Billboard Top 40 charting song ever. He’s on tour, has two movies coming out, he’s sold out on National Record Store Day, and a new recording project in the works. Corey doesn’t have any time for that kind crap. This whole thing is coming at a highly coincidental time, don’t you think? For the record, I have never seen Corey touch anything illegal, furthermore, I’ve never even seen Corey drink anything other than water or a classic Coca-Cola.”
On Sunday, Feldman took to Twitter where he explained his side of the story:
“HI #EVERYBODY & HAPPY 22ND! 4 THE RECORD, I WAS NOT ARRESTED OR PUT IN JAIL. I RECEIVED A MISDEMEANOR IN LOUISIANA, DUE 2 A MEMBER OF MY CREW HAVING MEDICAL MARIJUANA, WITH A LEGAL CA PRESCRIPTION, I HAD NOTHING ON ME, BUT WAS CHARGED BECAUSE ITS MY BUS. ALSO 5 OTHERS WERE CHARGED DUE 2 HAVING LEGAL MEDICINES WITHOUT THEIR PARTICULAR BOTTLES. NO ILLEGAL OR STREET DRUGS WERE FOUND ON THE BUS AT ALL! WHICH IS Y NOBODY SPENT THE NIGHT IN JAIL. HOWEVER WE WERE PROMISED THAT THESE CHARGES COULD ALL B DROPPED WITH PROOF OF PROPER SCRIPTS! IT WAS A BIT OF A GOOD OL SHAKEDOWN! AFTER WE PAID THEM IN CASH, THEY ASKED 4 PICS & AUTOGRAPHS, & THEN CALLED THE LOCAL PAPER 2 DO INTERVIEWS! I DO FIND THE TIMING OF ALL THIS IRONIC.”
Feldman went on to say that he and The Angels will continue the second leg of the “Angelic 2 The Core” Tour, and will be making a special stop to raise money for Houston Hurricane Relief next. As US Weekly also noted, his statement about the timing of the situation being ironic likely has to do with the fact that he recently spoke out against disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, propelling him back into the national spotlight. The star has claimed for years that he and his former costar, Corey Haim, were the victims of pedophiles in Hollywood. We applaud you, Corey Feldman, for standing up and speaking truth to power!
