Hip-hop artist Ishan may be involved in absolutely every aspect of his music career, but that doesn’t mean he is adrift on an island, working on his own.
While he did teach himself to produce, engineer, write, and record so that he could control the final product, bringing together the right people to work alongside him has made all the difference.
“Creating a team is one of the most important things you can do when you begin to take your craft seriously,” he says. “The goal to assembling a team is to find those who believe in you wholeheartedly and are willing to go to the furthest extent to help you succeed. They are people who will support you to no end without expecting anything back, they are people who you support as well. They must have a strong work ethic, and be willing to make all the sacrifices you have had to make and more.”
Ishan is the epitome of someone whose work ethic cannot be called into question. He is not only fast becoming one of the industry’s most innovative and interesting rappers, he is a full-time student at Northeastern University and holds a job working in immunology at a facility in Cambridge, not far from Boston, the city he now calls home.
“I dedicate myself to constantly getting better with every piece of art I make,” he says.
It’s a process he approaches with joy.
“I find a lot of fun in the mixing, editing, and mastering. It takes a long time but it is nice to see a song become perfect in your eyes,” he told Boston Culture.
Ishan has been rapping and writing lyrics since he was 12. He started producing music when he was 18.
And while he stands out from his peers thanks to his powerful, complex lyrics, the founding of his own business, Rarebreed, has given him the autonomy to be authentic, one of his most personal and important goals.
“I feel like I am at an advantage because I am now given full authority to make whatever I want without having to articulate what sound I am looking for,” he says.
He continues to push himself, and is fearless in his work, which touches on, among other things, sex, lost love, depression, success, and racial injustice, which he told Validated Magazine that he felt a responsibility to address.
“I think as an artist, whether big or small, you have a platform. Your platform is usually way bigger than you’d think, so why not use this platform to spread a message or raise awareness? There are systems in place currently that are against the best interest of the black community and force the inhibition of black success. This is a real problem in this country, and when that is coupled with the loss of innocent black life, I can never and will never be silent, and you will hear that in my music.”
That message is most evident in his 2020 song “Justice,” but given his past, it plays a pivotal role in many of his tracks.
Fresh on the heels of his latest EP “RANDUM ThOUGHTS,” Ishan and his team are already working on a new project.
